MEDICAL TOURISM IN COSTA RICA

Medical tourism in Costa Rica (also called Costa Rica medical travel, Costa Rica health tourism, or Costa Rica global healthcare) is a term initially coined by travel agencies and the mass media to describe the rapidly-growing practice of traveling across international borders to obtain health care. It also refers pejoratively to the practice of healthcare providers traveling internationally to deliver healthcare.

Medical treatments are usually about 50-70% cheaper than in the US and no one has to wait their turn for surgery. Easily accessible from US and Canada. There are frequent flights from important cities in both these countries. Also Americans, Canadians and most Europeans staying in Costa Rica for less than 90 days do not require a visa. They do need a passport that is valid for at least 30 days.

HOSPITALS IN COSTA RICA (MEDICAL CENTERS)

Some patients go to a hospital just for diagnosis, treatment, or therapy and then leave ('outpatients') without staying overnight; while others are 'admitted' and stay overnight or for several days or weeks or months ('inpatients'). Hospitals usually are distinguished from other types of medical facilities by their ability to admit and care for inpatients whilst the others often are described as clinics. Hospitals in Costa Rica have the latest equipment, and laboratories are excellent. You can feel safe having most operations without returning to the U.S., Canada or Europe. Most surgical procedures cost only a fraction of what they do in the U.S., Canada or Europe. For example, a heart bypass operations cost about a third of what they do in the U.S.

Private clinics and hospitals provide quicker services with more privacy, enabling you to avoid long lines and the bureaucracy of the public system. In Costa Rica the term Clinica is used for private institutions that generally include inpatient medical/surgical facilities, doctor’s offices, laboratories, and radiology, pharmacy, and outpatient services. Hospital generally refers to a public inpatient medical and surgical facilities that also provide laboratory, radiology, pharmacy and related services.
